Doesn't follow the book AT ALL, but it's still a fantastic family film that holds up VERY well
A timeless story about the special bond between a boy and a dog. Sadly, Disney didn't follow Jim Kjelgaard's original book at all, and really the only things that carry over from the book to the film are the title, and the Irish Setter. But the cinematography (filmed in Quebec, Canada and Big Bear, California) is breathtaking, and despite the near-total departure from Kjelgaard's original source material, the story unfolds beautifully.Unfortunately, Kjelgaard died a few years before the film was made. So it's anybody's guess how he would've felt about Disney's near-total rewrite of his story. He was a great storywriter, that loved animals and the outdoors. On the off-chance Disney ever does a remake, it'd be nice to see greater homage paid to Kjelgaard's original tale. All disappointment aside, Disney's rendition of 'Big Red' is still well worth your time. The real stars of the film are Red (the dog), and Rene (Gilles Payant). Veteran actor, Walter Pidgeon does a fine turn as well.Along with 'Old Yeller', and 'The Incredible Journey', 'Big Red' is one of the finer classic live-action Disney films to feature canines as the main character. Sadly, it's become an oft-overlooked and forgotten film in the massive Disney catalog. It's deserving of far more recognition than it gets.It would be nice to see 'Big Red' make its way to Disney + so the younger generations can experience it. Although, technically, 'Big Red' already HAS made its way to Disney +, by way of Marvel's 'WandaVision' series. During one of the later episodes of 'WandaVision', in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it scene, 'Big Red' is briefly shown to be the movie playing in the town's movie theatre during the 1960s. It was a nice Easter Egg to see.Hopefully more people will take the time to discover this wonderful film. They truly don't make 'em like this anymore.

it's more for grownups cuz it's a little scary
It's scary because a man fell off of his horse and he bled a little bit. I like that the boy was looking for Big Red.

Walt Disney's Exclusive "Big Red" DVD
Disney's Big Red DVD preserves an outstanding classic, which includes some superb actors. It is suggested this is one of the last movies that Walter Pidgeon appeared in. Disney found well-known actors to appear in his family movies. In addition Walt Disney had the genius to found foreign actors. The young actor, Gilles Bayant, was a 13-year old boy left on his own by a deceased Unclewho educated and raised him in the outback country of Canada. The he goes to the estate of a Canine Breeder, finds employment, and center of Blue Ribbon Breed Red Dog. This is an excellent family movie or for anyone regardless of age to gain an appreciation for the culture and ways of life in Canada. Walt Disney had the talent to give the viewer an appreciation for civility among people in many ways of living. The scenes and landscape of Canada, are an added benefit for this movie. It is a plus to have such classicWalt Disney movies available.

A beautiful story
We have always enjoyed this movie - it is a good, clean, family movie that never becomes outdated. It is about an orphaned boy trying to make his way in the world, a wealthy man who (at some time in the past) lost his son and can now value nothing beyond its monetary worth, and a costly Irish Setter belonging to the wealthy man to which the boy becomes attached. It is obvious where this is going, but the story is told beautifully and is set in the lovely countryside of Canada. This is a must see.

Wholesome family entertainment.
A classic family movie from Walt Disney. The film contains no bad language, no violence and no nudity. It is suitable for the whole family. The story revolves around a dog called Big Red and a young lad and their relationship based on love and trust. The dog is purchased by a rich gentleman with an intent to win shows with itIt is filmed in Canada and the scenery is beautiful. Why only four stars? It is a tad slow to start of with.A really entertaining feel good movie.
