Great horror read.
Here's my thoughts/review on The Chine by Peter Storm (@peterstorm2022)After getting out of a rocky relationship, Justyna takes the job of a lifetime. She gets to watch a hotel all by herself during the winter months. The hotel closes due to the slower business the weather brings. At first the place is pure bliss. Peace and quiet. Jacuzzi's. A nice warm fireplace. But weird things start happening at the hotel. Something sinister is lurking within these walls. The Chine took me by surprise. I fell in love with the book rather quickly. The plot was captivating and the writing was well thought out. With a killer concept and a great execution, this book was a strong 4 star read. While a strong read, there were a few things that I personally did not vibe with. These were all minor things. One thing was I felt like Justyna was a little too trusting and open to a new relationship after just getting out of an abusive relationship. I felt like she should've been a little more wary of Stephen and a bit harder around the edges.Another thing is I would've loved to see a little more build up of the spooks at the hotel. I wanted to explore more of what the large hotel had to offer. I felt like there wasn't enough time spent inside. Some things I loved:The dark past of the hotel. I love it when a place is able to become a character itself. The snowy setting. I love a good snowy horror and this book delivered! The action/tension kept me on the edge of my seat. The book is set at a great pace. With slower moments here and there to take the edge off, and horrifying moments to drag you right back in.

Riveting
Riveting!I read The Chine with an open mind; it’s not my usual genre—I’m a comedy / romcom /historical fiction fan. However, from the very first page I was intrigued. You are introduced to the dark world of Nathaniel Ballard and as you read on, you realise that not only is it based during the days of slavery but the dark side of grief and alcohol. The author cleverly switches between present day and bygone times (a little historical context -yay!) of merchants and slave trading. This alone is a sensitive subject but Peter Storm handles the subject respectfully. The story takes you through the ghostly presence of the spirits at The Chine and you understand why there’s so much happening at the hotel. The protagonists are likeable and you root for them in every aspect of the story. Well written, well thought out and well researched. A thrilling read that did make me sad for some of the characters. A definite recommendation from me!
