Facing Your Shadow-Self? Finally Living
At first i thought that this movie was about a kid facing his shadow-self. His shadow guiding him to finally get to the point in his life where he can finally let go and set his own self free. Due to tragedy, life changing events, abuse within or outside of the family, children grow up faster than what societies linear perspective on time can tell. When I was younger, I had to grow up faster than those around me. I had such a hard time making friends, such a hard time processing who I was and what I had to do. By the time that I was in the 5th grade, I was always told that i looked tired. By freshman year of high school, I looked like I was 30 or so I was told countless times. Watching this movie sent me back, brought nostalgia or the hard times and the relief I felt when I finally realized that I am human, those around me are human, I dont know their stories. I realized that i had to write my own. And by the end of this movie, I verbally wished that all of the children that are going through hard times like the hard times that Conor faced, that they realize they have the power within themselves to make it through. Ones power, talent, emotions, actions, etc., is not determined by anyone else other than yourself. If you choose to make it through, then tell yourself as many times as you need to that you will make it through and see the sun shining the next day. It was a beautiful movie with an amazing and deep lesson on what life really is. My definition of life? Life is a four letter word. There is a translation for this word in every language. No matter if you say it with an annoyed voice, happy tone, in a different language, or write it in any font, it will always be life. The only thing that can change is the pronunciation of the word and how you perceive it. The only other four letter word in the English language is 'LIVE'. At the end though, I was not surprised that the mother was also was familiar of the yew.

Buy me movie for sure! Makes you think
I first saw this movie at Target for $25, but decided to look on Amazon and see if it was any cheaper or not... and it was... $5 cheaper. I hadn't heard much about this movie when I first purchased it but the few things I had heard people had said it was really good. I decided to purchase it on amazon not really knowing much about it and never having seen it before. (Rare for me to do) Anyway, once I got this and started watching it I fell in love! This movie made me laugh, made me cry, made me angry, and mostly it made me think. It really caused me to look inside and try to figure out what Monsters am I hiding. What battles (so to speak) am I running from that I can't face. I think movies that cause you do that are rare! I love movies that make me think!Synopsis: A young boy (Connor) is dealing with far more than any boy at his age (probably around 12) should ever have to deal with. His parents are divorced, his mother has fallen ill and he is forced to go and live with his Grandmother who he doesn't have much in common with and doesn't seem to get along with. Connor forms a friendship with a Monster who appears in his room one night. This Monster helps him in a very unlikely way to sort through his emotions. He helps him to be able to have faith, find courage and hope through a very difficult time in his life.I would think that for older children this would be ok, but I am not sure about young ones watching it. There are some parts that could be a bit scary. I also don't know that kids under the age of about 12 would really understand the deeper meaning of this film.Overall I would HIGHLY recommend this movie! This is one you don't want to miss. As I like to say "It's a Buy me Movie" for sure

Heartfelt
Loved the 'pitch' - a monster tells a boy 3 stories. Couldn't wait to find out what they were - unfortunately, after the first one (which was great), the second was considerably less great, and the third one wasn't very good at all. The story that wrapped around them though was very heartfelt and well acted.

very very deep movie
I randomly picked this movie to put on expecting it to be a horror but instead wound up crying with a box of tissues. I'm not one to cry but this movie is so deep and touching. hands down one of the best stories and concepts. please give this move a view.

Great, but what did he say when the monster was screaming for the truth?
I rewound 5 or 6 times and did not understand him!

A Modern Day Aesop's Fable
Based on the novel by the screenwriter, this feature finds the remarkable balance that few other films come close to; a perfect blend of subtle character development, an exquisitely told story, and visuals that not only dazzle but perfectly accentuate an already stellar script. This is Bayona' signature piece; a heartwrenching, yet thoroughly engaging tale of the family bond, pain of hopelessness, the deception of perspective, and coming to terms with loss. If you were to separate the scenes and play them out of context, one would think the director's purpose was to mock convictions and truth but in its proper totality we are treated to a modern day Aesop's fable, teaching us that there is always a story behind a story, a truth patiently waiting to be discovered behind our dogmas. The entire cast is astounding with Weaver and Jones delivering utterly genuine performances. It is, however, young MacDougall who owns this production, literally reaching into the minds and souls of the audience and methodically tearing out our collective innocence exposing our deepest sorrows. His mix of naivety and bravery are both inspiring and tormenting to behold. Neeson's portrayal is equally profound, as both comforting sage and relentless antagonist. With a twist administered with a respectful care, this is how you define all that cinema aspires to be.It is only when the credits roll, that you realize, emotionally, you have been just as much a part of the story as each and every character.
