Q: Are the led lights like the newer, brighter color led lights or like the older color led ree lights?

They look like my new outside LED lights.

Q: How long do the batteries last?

ladt year I had them on the timer setting. The batteries lasted about 4 weeks

Q: Would this work well on a banister?

It worked on our banister but I could have used a few more to do what I wanted to go down the front of the banister. This year I plan to put two red ribbons on the front of the banister
